What Are Tech Neck Lines, and How Do You Fix Them?

When it comes to de-aging, one of the most common things that people want to address are lines and wrinkles that appear around the face and neck. As we age our skin produces less collagen and other core essential ingredients for creating new healthy skin tissue. This can cause skin to sag and cause wrinkles to appear more visible even when muscles are at rest. As injectors, we often refer to different common wrinkles by unique names. For example, your “bunny lines” appear around the nose when you scrunch your face. A new common issue is “tech neck” these are horizontal lines around the neck that are caused by looking down towards your phone or a computer screen for extended periods of time.

What Causes Tech Neck Lines?

People are spending more and more time looking down towards smart phones or other small screens. If your phone gives you a usage report weekly you might be shocked to find out how many hours a day you look at that screen. One of the ways this can affect is that it causes our heads to bend down. The term “tech neck” has been used to describe different symptoms caused by how often we look down. For example, lines can form because of how the skin on our neck folds when looking down. This skin is also more delicate that other types of skin like facial skin. Younger and younger people are noticing these lines starting to form.

How Do You Prevent Tech Neck Wrinkles?

There is similar advice for preventing wrinkles anywhere on your body. You need to take care of your skin. Wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated, and having a home skincare regimen that is recommended by your dermatologist or other healthcare provider can help keep your skin healthy. Dry skin caused by dehydration and sun damaged skin is more likely to wrinkle and show signs of aging. Of course for tech neck lines, you can also try to spend less time looking at screens or work on your posture when spending time looking at your phone.

How Do You Treat Tech Neck Wrinkles?

There are a variety of treatments that can help treat wrinkles. But not all wrinkle treatments are approved for use around the neck. Certain injectables including fillers can be used around the neckline to help decrease the visibility of wrinkles and lines that form around the neck and jawline. For example, Kybella isoften recommended for tightening skin around the jaw. Other treatments like PRP or platelet rich plasma can also help smooth skin and encourage the body to create new healthy skin tissue.
