What Is in Dermal Fillers?

When we think about injectables one of the first things you might instinctually think of are neuromodulators like Botox Cosmetic. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and similar injectables work by using ingredients known as neurotoxins that temporarily stop the muscles in the injected area from moving leading to a decrease in wrinkles and fine lines. But another common choice for preventing or treating the signs of aging are dermal fillers. In this article we will answer some core questions about dermal fillers, how they work, and what to expect. What Is In Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers have different ingredients depending on the brand. However, a very common ingredient in many dermal fillers hyaluronic acid. You may have noticed this ingredient on a variety of skincare products. Hyaluronic acid is an acid that our bodies produce naturally especially around the eyes and skin. This acid almost acts like an oil. It helps keep joins working smoothly, helps keep skin hydrated, and helps keep the skin smooth. Hyaluronic acid prevents wrinkles by making the skin more flexible.

But you might have two questions. First, if the body produces it naturally why would we need it injected? And second why have it injected vs used in a topical cream. To answer the first question, while our bodies produce hyaluronic acid, as we age we produce less. Part of why the signs of aging include losing elasticity to skin, smoothness, and even other symptoms like joint pain, is because our bodies frequently slow down on the production of key acids, enzymes, proteins, hormones, and other chemical compounds. Many of the signs of aging are all connected to our underproduction of these chemical compounds.

As for the second question, Hyaluronic acid can be administered in many different ways, but it will have different effects. There are many creams and lotions that use hyaluronic acid to help heal the outermost layers of skin tissue. But if you are looking for better results, injections are often recommended. Dermal fillers combine hyaluronic acid and collagen and deliver them deeper into the skin to add volume, smooth skin, and provide health to the skin.

How Long Does It Take To See My Results After Getting Fillers?

Initial results from fillers can often be seen immediately after the injection. Unlike Botox and neuromodulators, dermal fillers make an immediate adjustment. That said, the full effects can take a few weeks to appear. The filler has to integrate with the skin tissue which can take different amounts of time depending on the filler sued and the patient’s skin.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Fillers last different amount of times depending on what filler you get. Fillers can last anywhere from six months to a full year. It is important to understand that filler ingredients are often dissolved by the body slowly over time. Because fillers are providing supplements of chemicals and compounds our bodies produce, these resources get used up over time. Your filler results can also potentially be impacted by how you care for your skin. Dehydration, sun-damage, and other forms of damage can cause filler results to fade away faster.

Are Dermal Fillers Reversible?

In many cases fillers are reversible. This is because filler ingredients can be dissolved. This usually requires a separate injection that has the enzymes that can break down the chemical compounds in the fillers. It is important to understand that not every type of filler works this way. This is usually only true for fillers that are mainly hyaluronic acid-based because it is easy to break down hyaluronic acid.
