Have you heard of the “vampire facelift”? The scientific name for this treatment is Platelet Rich Plasma treatments. PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that has many applications. The body naturally can heal itself over time, and by utilizing our body’s own resources we can stimulate the healing process in different areas of the body. This includes facial treatments that can decrease the signs of aging by using platelet-rich plasma from our own blood.
What are Platelets?
Our blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The liquid part of the blood is called plasma, and it moves these cells throughout the body. Platelets help the blood clot and also support the healing process. When we are injured, platelets help stop the bleeding and start repairing the area.
How Does PRP Therapy Work?
PRP therapy works by using a client’s own blood to treat a specific area of the body. Blood is taken from the patient then reinjected in the treated area. One or two tubes of blood is removed from the body. The red blood and white blood cells are removed from the plasma leaving behind the platelets. This creates a concentrated vial of platelet-rich plasma. These platelets are then injected directly into the treated area. In some cases, this can be done for injury recovery to help speed up the process of healing muscles or sprains. But in the aesthetic services industry, PRP injections are used to reverse and treat the signs of aging.
PRP and Micro-Needling
Micro-needling is a process of using very small needles to gently prick the top layers of the skin. When using platelet-rich plasma to decrease the signs of wrinkles and sagging skin, this is the tool is used. Skin that is treated with micro-needling will begin to produce more collagen naturally which tightens skin and decreases the appearance of wrinkles and lines. For patients who may be looking for more drastic results than what could be achieved with Dermal Fillers Botox but are not interested in surgical procedures, PRP and micro-needling is the best of both worlds. On the one hand you can expect more significant results but without the downsides of a surgical procedure that would require downtime and recovery.
